How it works
- Annual replacement reserve = ÷
- Annual cash budget with reserves = Fixed annual costs + Fuel consumption cost + Annual replacement reserve
- Annual value loss or gain = ( − ) ÷
- Annual cost including value change = Annual cash budget with reserves + Annual value loss or gain
- Worked example: Combine USD 27,500 in annual fixed costs, USD 6,000 in fuel and a USD 3,000 replacement reserve. A USD 70,000 value loss over five years is a separate economic cost.
- Annual cash budget with reserves = 27,500 + 6,000 + 3,000 = 36,500 USD; Annual value loss or gain = 70,000 ÷ 5 = 14,000 USD; Annual cost including value change = 36,500 + 14,000 = 50,500 USD.

Assumptions and limitations
Costs use one currency. Fuel is in litres and price per litre. Replacement reserves are annual allocations, not necessarily spending in that year. Value change is purchase less expected resale divided by holding years; an expected gain produces a negative cost. The budget excludes purchase principal, loan repayments, and any costs not entered.
