How it works

  • Passage time = ÷ × (1 + ÷ 100)
  • Fuel consumed = Passage time × + (Passage time + ) ×
  • Fuel including reserve = Fuel consumed × (1 + ÷ 100)
  • Estimated voyage cost = Fuel consumed × +
  • Worked example: For 120 nmi at 12 kn with 10% extra time, use 40 L/h for the engines and 2 L/h for the generator, including four extra generator hours. At USD 1.50/L plus USD 200 in other costs:
  • Passage time = 120 ÷ 12 × 1.10 = 11 h; Fuel consumed = 11 × 40 + 15 × 2 = 470 L; Estimated voyage cost = 470 × 1.50 + 200 = 905 USD; Fuel including reserve = 470 × 1.20 = 564 L (20%).

Assumptions and limitations

Speed is average speed over ground in knots; enter combined engine consumption at that operating point. The generator runs during passage plus the extra hours entered. Reserve is added to fuel requirements but is not treated as consumed fuel. Fuel quantities and price must use the same selected unit. This budget does not assess weather, route safety, or the adequacy of a reserve.
